FINANCING FOR OIL & GAS

Financing for Capital-Intensive Energy Businesses

Oil and gas service companies, equipment suppliers and related businesses invest heavily in machinery, materials, personnel and project execution. Their financing needs follow industry activity, contract structures and the timing of customer payments.

Asset-based financing lets these businesses borrow against eligible receivables, equipment and other business assets. Great Elm reviews your collateral and financing goals and structures a facility suited to your circumstances.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

Operating Pressures in Energy Services

Energy businesses depend on expensive productive assets and project activity. Market cycles and payment terms then put pressure on liquidity. These are the pressures that most often lead to a financing conversation.

Drilling and maintenance activity, and the capital budgets behind it, move with energy-sector demand. When volumes swing, working capital is harder to plan and lenders look closely at the assets behind a facility.

Specialized machinery, fuel, repairs and crews must be funded whether or not customers have paid. An unplanned repair or idle equipment can strain liquidity quickly.

Service tickets, invoice review and approval by larger operators can take weeks. Completed work sits uncollected while payroll and supplier bills keep coming due.

Many energy-services businesses depend on a few large customers. Concentration, approved-ticket requirements and customer lien restrictions all affect how receivables are underwritten.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Oil & Gas Financing FAQs

Common questions about collateral, receivables and refinancing for energy-sector businesses.

Depending on the loan structure, eligible receivables, machinery, equipment, inventory and other business assets may be considered. Eligibility, valuation and existing liens are reviewed in underwriting. Great Elm does not provide reserve-based lending.

They can be considered. Eligibility depends on factors such as invoice approval status, payment history and any lien or contract restrictions, so each receivables base is reviewed individually.

When a large share of receivables comes from a few customers, lenders look closely at those customers' credit and payment behavior. Concentration can affect how much of the receivables base is eligible.
